New funding for bean herbicide development

Posted: January 19, 2010

The federal government is contributing $722,000 to Pulse Canada to develop a herbicide for bean growers that will dry crops faster for easier harvesting.

The move is to help the pulse industry protect export market access in the face of new international maximum residue limits that have led to fewer desiccation products available, according to a Government of Canada news release.

"This project will provide growers with options to protect quality at harvest time and deliver their world class products to the global market," says Conservative MP Bev Shipley.

Canada produces nearly 10 percent of the world's dry bean exports, valued at $136 million annually.

Arysta: Newly registered Pre-pare gests more bang out of glyphosate

Posted: January 19, 2010

Closing the gap on residual weeds not controlled by glyphosate alone is the focus of a move by Arysta LifeScience to register in Canada its product Pre-pare, a burndown herbicide for addition to glyphosate.

This glyphosate booster, previously available for this use in the U.S., helps wheat growers with troublesome grassy and broadleaf weeds, such as wild oats and green foxtail, at burndown, says the company in a release. It's of particular interest to producers who already apply glyphosate as a burndown treatment prior to seeding.

"Pre-pare extends the standard burndown application by making glyphosate work harder and the burndown last longer," says Craig Brekkas, Product Manager, Western Canada with Arysta LifeScience.
