New minor use option for white mold in dry beans

Posted: February 10, 2010

Canadian dry bean growers have a new option to treat white mold (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum), which causes significant yield losses.

Syngenta Canada has received a minor use registration for Allegro 500F fungicide to treat white mold in dry beans, the company said in a release. This is the fourth minor use registration received for Allegro, which is already registered for disease control in crops including potatoes, certain legume vegetables and brassica leafy greens.

"Until now there has only been one product available to dry bean growers to treat white mold and Syngenta is pleased to offer growers a new and more effective alternative," says Andrea McConnell, brand manager with Syngenta Crop Protection Canada. "We are confident that growers will be happy with the results they achieve by using Allegro either as their only fungicide or as part of a tank-mix."

The product was tested in field trials at the Huron Research Station in Guelph, Ontario conducted over three consecutive years. Results showed average yield increases of 27 per cent with Allegro and 37 per cent when Allegro was tank-mixed with Quadris (another Syngenta product), when compared to the untreated check.

Expanded label for potato seed-piece treatment

Posted: February 10, 2010

The Titan potato seed-piece treatment has received new registration for control of above-ground pests.

According to a news release from Bayer CropScience Canada, the product now has an expanded label to include control of Colorado potato beetle, aphids (potato, green peach, foxglove and buckthorn), potato leafhopper and potato flea beetle.

This development makes Titan the broadest spectrum insect seed-piece treatment available for Canadian potato growers, says the company. Titan, a Group 4 insecticide, was initially registered in early 2009 to reduce the damage caused by wireworm in potatoes.
